HAWRIDGE & CHOLESBURY 1ST X1 v LITTLE MARLOW 1ST X1

Saturday 24th May 2008

Little Marlow played a heavy price for their shoddy fielding at Hawridge and Cholesbury, eventually crashing to a humiliating defeat.

Batting first on a slow and low surface, the host’s saw their Sri Lankan opener, Gunnersekera, given three lives as he dominated their formidable 301 for 4 declared from 47.4 overs. First put down on about 40, the tall right-hander cashed in massively by stroking his way to an impressive 178. Particularly severe on anything over-pitched, he was well supported by Robinson (33), with whom he shared a 90 runs opening partnership, and Hamblin, who supplied an undefeated 53 towards a fifth wicket stand of 173.

Captain Arfan Sharif rotated his bowlers, but only the slower pace and accuracy of Tahir Rashid, who took 3 for 40, was successful in stemming the runs and taking wickets. A fine low catch by Imran Ali was the highlight of the fielding, which otherwise became increasingly ragged as the afternoon progressed.

A seemingly demoralized Little Marlow line-up offered little resistance during a largely spineless response. Anwar Mahmood (53) and debutant Jamil Khalid (22) made the only noteworthy contributions, adding 56 together for the second wicket before their team spiralled to a pathetic 114 all out. Spinner Rifei bowled splendidly to earn figures of 6 for 39.

LITTLE MARLOW 2ND X1 v HAWRIDGE AND CHOLESBURY 2ND X1

Saturday 24th May 2008

The 2nd X1 match between the two clubs was just as one-sided, only this time it was Little Marlow who handed out the thrashing.

A beautiful Bradish Ellames Recreation Ground pitch was completely wasted when a very young Hawridge side elected to bat, and was promptly rolled over for a completely indefensible 82. Only Rutt, who went in at number three and remained undefeated on 25, survived for long as Andy Findlay (3 for 12), Tim Potter (2 for 17), Quentin Falk (2 for 11) and Brian Robinson (2 for 13) shared most of the wickets.

Little Marlow’s fielders tried their best to boost Hawridge’s total by spurning several opportunities, although Dave Stoolman did extremely well to hold two juggling, over-the-shoulder catches.

The hosts knocked the runs off in quick time, leaving nearly half the games allotted 100 overs unused. Dave Armitage (25*) played the anchor role, while Piet Kruger smashed a typically robust 32 towards an 8-wicket victory.
